[Video] Method Man x @Dlaruemusic x M-Dot - "Shine"

Some months back, Boston lyricist M-Dot let loose the 1st official single "Shine" off his long awaited debut album "Ego and The Enemy" (2 Part CD release). The track, which evokes raw Hip-Hop balanced with a current-day clean sound immediately was embraced worldwide, accumulating over 100k plays collectively over multiple audio platforms. Now he follows up with visuals to the Method Man (Wu-Tang), Dominique Larue and Katy Gunn assisted smash in this aesthetically pleasing, creatively focused animated offering by Serbian based director Slobodan Bokka Medarevic and the Street Hearted Videos team.

Over the course of the 4 minute vividly illustrated parable, "Shine" imaginatively depicts a group of young, 'Independent' minds fighting through the covert grip of their oppressors in order to once again illuminate society. The video uniquely showcases the constant conflict between good vs. evil, light vs. darkness. Most evident is the cautionary underlying that the 'underground' will not remain dormant forever... eventually WE will SHINE through!

"Shine" is the second video in M-Dot / Own Lane Music's "4th Quarter" onslaught. "Ego and The Enemy" (Disc 1: due out early 2016) will feature production by Hi-Tek, Marley Marl, Buckwild, M-Phazes, Marco Polo, !llmind, Da Beatminerz, 7L, Snowgoons and many more. Also, the sequel to "Shine" has already been recorded with M-Dot, Tical, producer Soulplusmind and a few SURPRISE guests all aboard for Part 2 (story-bridging visual in the works as well).

Producer Billionaire Boyscout's Analysis on the Drake vs. Meek Mill Rap Feud.

The nicest on the mic wins........no seriously.

I low key paid attention to these Drake diss songs and I can actually break down exactly why, unless Meek Mill completely goes out of character, will win this battle (he won't end his career though, Meek is a very talented individual)

Drake is taking the "the nice guy wins at the end of a family sports comedy movie" role to the next level. Almost "Mr. Deeds" worthy. He knows, after the ghost writing exposé, that he has to prove that even though they weren't 100% his lyrics, it was 100% his story. This is a task any rapper would have to prove in a rap battle, or rap period, but there is a wild card we must consider. Drake is one of the few mainstream rappers that makes doing nice guy shit, being in feelings, being open on failed relationships, openly loving his childhood friends, etc, actually acceptable, thus making "living his raps" a lot easier than a lot of more street artist.

Examples:

- Drake said he should send bottles to Charlemagne for being honest about this whole ordeal, Drake actually does it.

-Drake said he's in the Rolls enjoying philly rapper, AR AB, so much that Drake signs him so more people can enjoy him

-Drake said he riding thru Philly, and even tho him getting shoulder rubs in a strip club can't be confirmed yet, he did donate money and studio equipment to Meeks old school...personally to confirm he was in fact in Philly.......in Meek's own neighborhood.

Now, Meek is a VERY dope spitter, but his usual tactics will not work in this scenario. If Cassidy said "Im'ma shoot you in the face" and Meek said "No, Im'ma shoot you in the face", the winner is whoever said it the most wittiest, creative and/or most convincing way.

BUT

If Drake said he's gonna send Charlemagne expensive ass gifts for saying Meek is losing on live national syndicated radio, and ACTUALLY DO IT (perfectly timed I might add), and Meek still says in his upcoming diss "Yo Aubrey, Im'ma shoot you in the face", THE ONLY WAY MEEK WILL WIN THAT BATTLE IS BY ACTUALLY SHOOTIN DRAKE IN THE FACE.

Drake found a loophole in the mainstream rap feud rules: keep it on wax.
Use all the gunlines you want, but DON'T ACTUALLY SHOOT SOMEONE IN REAL LIFE, because once someone gets hurt, both parties must forfeit.

In this case, If Meek uses gun lines, it's either keep it on wax or go to prison for the rest of your life for attempted murder or murder. Drake on the other hand was able to break that rule disrespectfully as fuck and still be looked at as a wholesome model citizen and a hero. That's why this feud is different.

Basically, if Meek said "I should free Tibet" and takes a selfie with a 200 year old monk holding a pair of Pumas, he wins automatically.

Salute to both brothers tho

[Audio] Tyler The Creator Featuring Kanye West & Lil' Wayne - "Smuckers"

So check it.. I always thought Tyler was COOL but this shit RIGHT HERE is pretty fuckin' dope. I'd hate to be the guy that would only give approval after 2 of hip-hop's greats make an appearance on your shit but fuck it. This is Kanye's best verse in a while and for damn sure Wayne's. I wish Wayne's programming would get stuck in this mode when it's time for him to rap, which disables him from all the whining and singing shit. Rap like THIS, my dude. Not like the guy who's naming his album after YOU and initially trying to sound like YOU, to begin with, which makes the situation in itself very weird and un called for. Rap in the voice of a GROWN ASS MAN and not the "CHASING THE BULLIES DOWN THE STREET THAT STOLE MY PINK BIKE W/THE POM POM SHIT HANGING OUT THE HANDLEBARS" and things of that nature. THIS, is perfect Wayne. Moving forward, dope ass beat, crazy sample selection. I love rare samples that all generations of hip-hop didn't use, over and over. Dope switch offs between verses. It's a must listen. Tyler must be a really special dude to pull some shit off like this and still manage to keep up w/two guys named Kanye & Lil' Wayne.

[Album Review] Kendrick Lamar - "To Pimp A Buterfly" - By @SincerelySaRese

If you were to close your eyes not knowing what you were about to listen to, the alto saxophone being played by Terrace Martin coupled with Robert Glasper on the piano, transports you into a scene from Mo’ Better Blues.  The Jazz influence on this album is incredible but if you’re no stranger to Dot then you know production like this isn’t new to him or any of his previous projects.

I’m sure I didn’t catch every sample on the album but a few of them include Smooth Criminal, The Payback, We Want The Funk, Every Nigger is A Star, On Your Own and That Lady. With appearances from Anna Wise, Lala Hathaway, Snoop, Ronald Isley, James Fauntleroy, Bilal, SZA, George Clinton and Pharrell Williams, Dot has found a way to keep us conscious while giving us music reminiscent of Cali in the 90s, drop tops and low riders, 40 ounces and cook outs. In one word, To Pimp A Butterfly is funky. I’ve been a fan of K. Dot’s since Overly Dedicated but this is like Section 80 on steroids; O-Dog (Menace II Society) meets Darius Lovehall (Love Jones).

With the amount of layers in this album, how do you start? It’s obvious that Dot needs to come out with his own version of Decoded but in the meantime we are left to repeatedly run his songs back while thinking “did he just say that?” There are several quotable lyrics throughout this album but probably one of the most infamous is from Hood Politics “From Compton to Congress set tripping all around/ ain’t nothing new but a flu of new DemoCrips and ReBloodicans/red state vs blue state what side you governing/they give us guns and drugs call us thugs make it they promise to f*&k with you/no condom they f*&k with you/Obama say what it do?”

It’s no secret that the government is the biggest gang in the world. Elections are rigged, they lie and tell us that our votes matter, they give our loved ones weapons, put them in uniforms and send them out to fight wars that aren’t our own. Our streets are flooded with drugs and guns and we participate in self-governed population control while they sit back and watch. And who has a front row seat, the leader of the free world, our President.

Perhaps the thing that stuck out the most to me is the Tupac interview. The first time I heard it, it made my skin crawl. At the end of Mortal Man Kendrick is reading what he opts not to call a poem, just his thoughts and at its conclusion he asks someone’s perspective. The minute he begins to answer, it’s clear that he’s talking to Tupac. Eerie is an understatement as Pac prophesizes the future (the initial interview was recorded in New York City 1994) stating that he believes the current generation is going to erupt into Nat Turner 1831. Chilling to say the least when you look at events like what happened in Ferguson.

Kendrick goes on to read what a friend wrote him describing his world, which is also where the title of the album stems.
“The caterpillar is a prisoner to the streets that conceived it, its only job is to eat or consume everything around it to protect itself from this mad city. While consuming its environment, the caterpillar begins to notice ways to survive. One thing it notices is how much the world shuns him but praises the butterfly. The butterfly represents the talent, the thoughtfulness and the beauty within the caterpillar but having a harsh outlook on life the caterpillar sees the butterfly as weak and figures out a way to pimp it to its own benefits. Already surrounded by this mad city, the caterpillar goes to work on the cocoon, which institutionalizes him. He can no longer see past his own thoughts, he’s trapped. While trapped inside these walls certain ideas take root such as going home and bringing back new concepts to this mad city. The result, wings begin to emerge breaking the cycle of feeling stagnant. Finally free, the butterfly sheds light on situations the caterpillar never considered ending the internal struggle. Although the butterfly and the caterpillar are completely different, they are one in the same…”

Kendrick calls out to Tupac who doesn’t answer. Of course we know these are just excerpts taken from a previous interview but for a moment, Pac’s silence made me think that while Dot was explaining this metaphor to him, he was wrapping himself in his own cocoon, in preparation of his own metamorphosis and when Dot called out for his response, he couldn’t answer him. It reminds me of the scene at the end of Alice in Wonderland (Tim Burton, 2010) when Alice is talking to Absalom and she looks to him for a response but he is already encapsulated. Dot speaks about vibrations and the energy that we put out into the world so to use Tupac at the end of his project was ingenious coupled with the analogy of a butterfly because the vibrations he left behind are still felt to this day.

I was always told that some people dream in color, some in sound, and others dream of nothing at all but it’s obvious that Kendrick Lamar is dreaming out loud.

[Review] @TravDave's Take On "If You're Reading This It's Too Late"

Sooooo… Aubrey dropped a surprise album, mixtape, mix-album on us late on the 12th of February right before Valentine’s Day. I see you Aubrey, but it seems like it’s a lot going on with this situationship. Did he drop the project to fulfill his contract with Cash Money Records? Did he drop this in the middle of Diddy’s show out of spite? Did he want to one-up Jay Z’s baby mama? Who knows for real. I’m just going to review this album track by track. FYI…I’ve been listening to this mix-album since 6:30 am Friday so I feel like my opinion is 93% fact.

Legend (produced by PartyNextDoor): Man, listen this joint right here is dope. PND killed the production on this. Perfect for Aubrey to flow over and harmonize to. Plus, the hook is perfect for a club scene with bottles and bitches. I see the vision in slow motion. The Ginuwine sample is subtle enough but still stands out. This one is car ready.

Energy (produced by Boi-1da): I’m not feeling this one too much. It sounds like a filler track. The production is dark to me, but the sample of Eazy-E’s, Eazy-Duz-It was kinda dope. I got the vibe they were going for, but I would skip this one. This track doesn’t pass the car test.

10 Bands (produced by Boi-1da): Classic braggadocios rap from Drizzy. One thing for sure, he’s great with melodies and flows. There are some dope lines in the song that people will definitely tweet. The track’s production is cool. Nothing great but it’s worth a couple of run backs. The bridge is catchy, but the hook is very simple. Aubrey is usually good money with the hooks but was slightly off with this one. Overall it passes the car test.

Know Yourself (produced by Boi-1da): This was definitely made for his crew. A #TBT track of sorts where he reminisces about running around the city with his friends. We’ve always known Drake to have a tight circle. This feels like a throwaway track also. That’s just me being honest. I skip this one. No way that this passes the car test.

No Tellin’ (produced by Boi-1da): The flow on this track is the same flow that has been on the last few tracks making it seem like he is more worried about the flow of the track than bars. The production is good and you can hear the chemistry between Boi-1da and Aubrey. He points out that he isn’t “the same Drake from four years ago”. I like this one. It passes the car test.

Madonna (produced by 40): Drake and 40 are really a dope duo and take chances within rap music without forcing it or being weirdos for the sake of being weird. Although it’s not my favorite, the vibe on this is nice and you get another Ginuwine sample. If I smoked weed with a blonde that had a fat ass I would play this and vibe with her. Honestly all depends on what my mood is for this to pass the car test.

6 God (produced by Boi-1da): “I’m about to say a true thing, I’m about to say a true thing.” Y’all have heard this before and it’s a good record. That “You was poppin when Usher wore a ‘U’ chain, God damn you changed” line was tough and supposedly a shot a Puff Daddy.

Star67 (produced by Vinylz): The 1st couple bars of this track pose some questions. Did he take a shot at B, Bryan, Baby, Bubba, or was he just rapping? This record is cool also. That same flow.. on these spacey beats. I was presently surprised to hear a beat change halfway through the song. He does some self-reflecting on this one also. Like many tracks on the album, I feel like this one was filler. While the Degrassi reference is good to hear from him, this doesn’t pass my car test.

Preach (featuring and produced by PartyNextDoor): I have a confession. This is my first time hearing PND on a track on purpose. I think girls are going to love this record. It’s catchy and definitely made for the young and pretty. He’s talking that shit on this one. I’ve already fired off some tweets with lyrics from this song. The most impressive thing is that the last 20seconds of this track goes into a house, almost disco vibe with a version of “My Boo” by Ghost Town DJs that I wish was a full song. That is easily the best part of the track. For that part solely, this passes the car test.

Wednesday Night Interlude (featuring and produced by Party Next Door): I totally skipped over this. No thank you fiesta adjacent house. Shout to my boy Evil for that description.

Used to (feat Lil Wayne produced by Wondagurl): If you downloaded Lil Wayne and his apology for making you wait tape, then you heard this one already, so there’s no need to go over this with you. I honestly think Drake is taking shots at Puff Daddy again with lines like “Shaq posting up on niggas that I use to have posters of, Real quick you couldn’t have hated that, let’s be real man you couldn’t have made it that” – talking about 0-100. Wayne makes me wonder about him sometimes with lines like “Why you hanging with Terry that has a Blackberry”. This passes the car test.

6 Man (produced by 40): The Lou Will shout out was dope. Drake finally finds his bounce on this one. Of course he and 40 are like Batman and Robin on this track. 40 comes with the classic break down at the end and even Jill Scott got a check from this. Truth is, Aubrey floated over this track effortlessly. Turn this up in the car and pass that test with flying colors.

Now and Forever (produced by Eric and Jimmy): This track’s vibe is haunting and kinda creepy with a repetitive cadence. Imagine a Lil Jon song made with pillows and bubbles. That’s what I think of when I hear this song. It’s boring and soft. Even the gun shot in the productions sounds like a pea shooter. No thanks…Fail Whale – word to ‘08 Twitter.

Company (feat Travis Scott, produced by Wondagurl): It seems like Aubrey took a video of one his days out and watched it on DVD then wrote a rap about it. The melody is ok on this one, but when that base drops and the Travis Scott vocals slightly come in, it gets lit (as the kids would say). The vibe is dope and Travis Scott sounds good on this. The autotune is a lot but if I wasn’t a backpack hippity hop dude I wouldn’t mind. Overall this is a keeper and passes the car test….Barely

You and the 6 (produced by Boi-1da/40/Illmind): This is one of my favorite records on If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late. I’m gonna be biased and brief. THIS SHIT FIRE.

Jungle (produced by 40): I’ll be honest. I was going to shit on this record. Then, I gave it a good listen and Drake is pretty damn good wit R&B records. Emo Drake and 40 aka Jordan and Pip are going to have the ladies with this one. This is that – 1am on Thursday night, you get that, come over I wanna “talk” message and you show up and she’s wearing something sexy music. Do not, I repeat (this is for you Dwight Howard types) DO NOT listen to this with ya mans and them. All ladies everything. This passes the test for sure.

6p in New York (produced by Boi-1da): Bars on bars on bars. When Aubrey decides to rap like this, there aren’t too many emcees that can go with him. Continuing his “timed series” of songs, this falls right in the pocket. Oh, and the Tyga diss just makes this song even better. Tyga let Chris Brown out rap him, so he doesn’t want them problems with Drake. This is my favorite song on this mix-bum.

Drake sold this mixtape and I bought it. I bought into the hype. Hypebeast Trav. The project has a lot of fillers and stuff, but in all honesty I like Drake and his music. 17 songs are too long in the 140 character age but that’s fine with me. New Drake is always good for culture and in the end hip-hop (and r&b) wins. All in all, this album passes the car test.
